Last days gone by so quickly...

So now I'm home in Belgium again...
It feels really strange, like I'm in a different world.
The last days I spend in Denmark were really emotional. Saying goodbye to everything and everybody was very hard to do. I was very sad and cried a lot.
Fridaymorning the girls left very early... I had to wait for my father because he would pick me up and drive me home. I was very happy to see him and cried again... We drove immediatly back to Belgium...
It was hard to drive away from Haderslev... my city for the past 3 months.
The trip home was OK, there were some trafficjams but it was ok.
I came home at around 12 pm. The kitchen was filled with balloons of the Belgium three-coloured flag. Though we don't have a government anymore.... :-) stupid politics!
I saw my sister and mother (and cat) again and ow yes you know it, I cried again. Haha!
I got a gift and we drank champagne... It was very nice... (in the words of Maria)
I'm very happy to be home but I miss my new friends and Denmark allready so much. I will never forget this experience and I'am very happy I did this.
I'm gonna tell everybody that they have to do this if they get the chance.
I'm allready planning to go to Valencia, Charleroi and prague this summer. But I don't know if it's going to be possible.
This experience has encouraged me to see more of the world and explore more countries and meet more people... but also that I love my family soooo much. They mean everything to me.
They will be there for me at all times, and I hope I can be there for them too...

Now I'm busy with processing everything and giving it a place in my life. Now all I have is my memories and I will cherish them for ever!
This is not 'Goodbye' but 'See you soon'.

Noooooorrrrwaaaaaaay!!!

In the easterbreak I went to Norway to visit Lisa and Nick. Two of my closest friends who are on erasmus over there. It was soo nice to see them. I really enjoyed it. A week of pure fun and relaxation.
Norway was very beautiful, I liked it very much. I actually really wanted to go snowboarding. But it seemed like it was too expensive... Too bad! How cool would it be to tell everybody I board the norwegian mountains? I'll tell you VERY cool!! Haha
So when i heard we could't go boarding i wanted to go to preikenstolen. The famous rock. I heard from my new norwegian friends in Denmark that it's really beautiful when the weather is nice. But One guy went a few days earlier and he said it was very dangerous because there was still lying a lot of snow and there was a lot of wind. They almost got blown away.
So that plan didn't work out quite as I wanted.
Despite of all the ruined plans, I saw a lot of new things I liked very much. Like the ocean, the mountains, the old city with the harbor, the university was nice too, Nick and I took a walk in there, I was amazed all the doors opened automatically for us and all the lights went on the minute we walked in a room. They really like sensors in Norway! Kind of spooky sometimes!!
It was very strange to visit another erasmus-gang while i have my own gang in Denmark. I liked that I could compare...
So I spend the first of april there. Nick and I couldn't help ourselves and we had to fool Lisa... We wrote a letter on official stationery of the Stavanger University adressed to Lisa. It said that she has not paid for her housing and that she had to do so and pay a fine or otherwise she had to look for another housing possibility... She bought the story completely!!! She was panicking all around... It was sooo funny. Haha! At first she was a bit mad but then she had to admit it was a very good prank! APRIL FOOL!!!!
It was a very nice trip and I'm very glad that I did it. Just too bad our other good friend, Eva couldn't be there with us because she is on erasmus in Turkey for the moment. We call the four of us 'the fab four' and we're very close, I love them all so much!! But this summer we're all gonna be done with school and then we will party all together, it will be so great! Looking forward to this!! Everybody has to come to Belgium! To the Gentse feesten!!! And party with us for 10 days in a row!! --> http://www.youropi.com/nl/gent/evenementen/gentse-feesten-322

Practice

Last week Ine and I went to our Practice school. We had to go each day of the week from 9 to 12 o'clock.
It was very interesting to see how different the system is from Belgium.
In Belgium the kindergarden consist 3 classes. You have one class for the three-yearolds, one for the Fouryearolds and one for the fiveyearolds. In Denmark it’s not quite thesame. In Denmark children from 3 to 6 year old are sitting all together in a kindergarden. Each class in Denmark has 2 teachers and 1 'helper'. In Belgium we only have 1 teacher.
The focus in Denmark lies on being independent, taking care of yourself and social skills. I was suprised how much the little children could do themselves. The teacher explained that the older children are an example for the young ones. The younger children copy the behavior of the older children and learn a lot this way.
Once a week there is a 'schoolgroup'. That's for the oldest children who are getting ready to go to the first grade. In the schoolgroup they make exercises an learn some of the letters.

I liked the practice because I was in my natural habitat, surrounded by children I mean. I love them, but it was very sad I couldn't bond with them because I don't understand them and they don't understand me. So it became kind of boring after a while, because I couldn't do anything to help, unless it was with signlanguage which allready is a challenge for young childeren.

A very cool part of the practice was that one boy had a birthday, so i get to experience a real danish birthdayparty. It was very strange, because all the children are invited inside the house of the birthdayboy during the schoolhours. Normally they all take citybusses, but now the house was not on the route of any bus so there was a hired bus who took us to the house. I was very amazed by this. In Belgium this could never happen. If we want to plan a trip, it has to be prepared weeks in advance, we don't always have a bus, and taking a citybus is out of the question because it's way too dangerous.
That's why I'm very happy to have experienced this party. It is nice for the birthdayboy. You could see that he was very proud to show all of his toys and his house to his classmates. It's also very nice for the other children to take a look into somebody else's house, and learn about differentiation and different lifestyles.
Before a party like this, the children are being told some guidelines about how to behave in somebody else his or her house, on a citybus, in the towncenter.... So it's not only a fun happening, it's also a way to teach children how to behave in public and learn them some social skills.

Citizenship and globalisation

Ok, to be very honest, I was physically present is these lessons, but not always mentally. I found it very hard to keep focus and concentrate. I think globalisation is a very interesting and important subject. But I just can't keep my head to it.
In this subject you can discuss all you want about the way we should live and what would be better to do for mankind and nature... without even getting somewhere. I think it's kind of useless that we discuss it because we can't do anything about it. Ok, we have to know what is going on, but I think we could learn about that in fewer and shorter lessons. That way I probably could keep focus on what's important and what is not.
The lesson I remember the most is one of the first ones. It was about language and identity. We got it from Karen Aaroe. In that lesson we had to make a little portrait of ourselves while focussing on the languages we speak, want to speak or understand. We gave each language a different colour that represents the way we feel about it. For example... In my heart i put red for Italian, because i really want to learn Italian and maybe later move to the country because i love everything about it. And the main colour was orange for flemish because it's my mother tongue.
Whit the colours we had to make some sort of a poem (an Elfchen to be more accurate). I picked the colour Red. And it was something like this:

Red
my blood
in my body
without it I die
Life

Afterwards we had to think about what word in our own language and in English we love the most. I thought that was very difficult because we have so many words. But eventually I chose 'Bloem' which means flower in English. And for my English word i chose Butterfly.
I liked this lesson very much because we did something ourselves and made a product, I think that's important to me.

Special needs

In the lessons special needs we talked about some different dissorders and what is being done in Denmark to improve inclusion.
We each got an assignment. We had to make a presentation where we would explain something about the way special needs education is being organized in our own country.
We talked about the different types of dissorders we have in Belgium and how they are being divided in classes. Currently we are trying to change the system in Belgium. The government has made up a plan. The goal of the plan is to improve inclusion more and look at each child more individual.
As I listened to the presentation of all the other countries, it became clear to me that we all have kind of the same problems. A lot of pupils, few teachers, a lot op pressure on the teachers an so on. One thing is sure, every country tries their hardest to improve inclusion and to make education approachable for every child.

International week

It started the 15th of April... The international week. I didn't know what to expect, though we had gotten a program from Jette, it was all very exciting!!! Monday morning we met all the students and teachers who came to visit for one week. Everybody introduced him or herself and it soon became very clear that this was going to be great. All the different nationalities together in one classroom. It was very strange and I knew that I was going to experience this only once. So I was going to make the best of this for sure!
During the week we did all kinds of different activities like making music, making a video and so on. The nicest thing we did was the cooking. I think everybody enjoyed that very much. We each made a dish from our country... we made Belgian Waffles. After the cooking we all sat together and enjoyed each others dish. It was very Hyggelig!!! Then we sang a song together that Vojta had translated in each of our languages. In a strange way, I felt very connected to everybody.
The second activity that was great for me was the trip to Ribe, the oldest village of Denmark. And the evening that followed on that. We ate some pizza all together and afterwards there was a eurovision contest. Everybody had to represent his country. The Belgians were divided in three groups, because we were so many. I was in the third group together with Loes, Ine, Caroline, Stefanie and Lynn. We decided to perform something of the most popular Belgian girlband for kids 'K3'. We sang and danced to 'Alle kleuren van de regenboog' or translated 'All the colours of the rainbow'. We thought it was very appropriate for the evening and the whole week. And the the most wonderful thing happened!!! We won!!!Wooohooow!!!
I really enjoyed this week, it's a really good initiative, and the organisation of it was great! Thx to Jette and Charlotte!!

Drama

Tuesday, all the erasmus-students had to go to Aabenraa for some drama-lessons.
I was lucky because I could ride along with Mette, who went with her car. We first had some trouble finding the University in Aabenraa.
There weren't a lot of people there, because a lot of people have got visitors or are away...
The drama-lessons were OK. You could see that the teacher had put his effort into it. But It was a bit dissapointing because we played some games that we played many times before in our school. So that was kind of boring. However, I saw some new things too. Like making a story around one picture while listening to some music. It was too bad it was a very sad picture and sad music too. That's why everybody had about the same story around the picture, a funeral to be more specific.
Maybe the teacher could have chosen another picture where people look happy... It would have been more fun.

In the very beginning....

Wow! It seems like such a long time ago that I arrived in Denmark and I had my first lesson. It’s very strange when I think of it.

One of the first lessons I had to attend was art. We had to draw a self-portret. The first time I tried, it didn’t look like anything. It was very bad. But then the teacher tought us some technics en tricks to draw a face. Near the end it went very well actually. The last portret I drew, was a succes, I was very proud of it. It might not look that much like myself but it was suprised I did it.

I’ve learned a lot in the art-class. Mostly about drawing faces. But also that I enjoy drawing very much. I have to practice that’s for sure but maybe I will coninue to draw things. Maybe someday I will be good

Hvad hedder du?

So I think it’s about time I write something about the classes I follow here...

The one question I get the most is ‘Can you speak or/and understand Danish now?' Wel I must say I’m afraid not.

We had some Danish lessons where we learned to say our name (Jeg hedder Marie) or ask somebody what’s his or her name (Hvad hedder du?). We also learned to ask 'How are you' (Hvordan gar det?) and to count to 100. We also learned some basics like how to say how we feel and so on.

I must say that Danish is a very complexed language... There are a lot of words but they only pronounce the vowels and it’s like you have to put something between your teeth to pronounce it the correct way.

Despite of all that, the danish teacher tried her best to learn us soms things. There wasn’t a lot of time to teach us a lot unfortunately! I enjoyed the Danish lessons, the teacher tried to make it fun by playing some easy games. I’m glad I know some Danish now.

Sleepover slumber party!!!

Monday evening I slept at the residence where the spanish girls, Cedric and Marguerite stay. They first came to pay me a visit and then I went along with them, because I was home alone... Caroline, Ine and Loes went out because they had company.
We watched a very nice nice movie called "They're all fine", it was a sad movie, but i liked it because it was about life... it was a kind of movie that makes you think, i like those movies...
It was very hygge!!
I'm really happy I met Maria, Carla, Isabel, Cedric and Marguerite, and of course all the rest also!
I was very welcome in their house and it felt sooo good.
I think I'm going to Valencia on my next trip!!

the door

O my god! I forgot to put the most amazing news on my blog!!!
Our door made a lot of noise when we first came here, I mean it was like there was a blizzard outside. But strangely enough, it didn't make noise all the time, sometimes it stopped and then a few hours later it began (like a train gaining speed) VERY annoying!!
BUT then came my hero (AKA Daddy) to Denmark!!!
My dad fixed the door!!! He shutted the ventilation in the kitchen, because that was sucking all of the air outside, so the air came trough a little peephole in the door inside... and that was causing the noise...
I have the best daddy in the whole world!! Nobody can deny it now!!!
Thank you for fixing the door dad!! Now I can sleep well again!
Love you!!

Visit from my parents and sister

This weekend my parents and sister visited me. It was soo great!! I had a very good time. They arrived friday evening at 18.30 pm... At least they try to arrive then. They didn’t expect the snowfall, and neither did I. It must have snowed 25 cm in 2 or 3 hours. I was quit worried, but not that much because my dad happens to be the best driver of whole Belgium!!! Hihi

So they arrived half an hour later... I immediatly had to pack my bags because we were going to kolding, suprise suprise!!The road to Kolding was really awfull!!! It was like we were on a set of a movie about the end of the world. Really we passed trucks and cars who were stuck in the snow, it seemed surreal, like a videogame... It was very dangerous on the roads... but we finally made it to Kolding 2 hours later... (normally it would have been a half hour drive) Thanks to our magnificent driver (AKA Daddy).

We ate something but were all very tired and went allmost immediatly to bed. The next morning we woke up to an amazing landscape. It was really beautiful!! The view was super!! We looked out on a fjord that was half covered in snow and were surrounded with trees with a little white layer of snow on top of each little branch. It was also the first time we could look at the hotel properly and we were very excited about it. It looked like a castle. The weather was very nice. The sun was shining and made the snow sparkle, so it was very fun to wake up to that! The breakfast in the hotel was a-ok!! We had a lot of choice, allmost everything you can imagine having for breakfast!

After a good breakfast we started walking trough the woods to the city. It was a very long walk, but nobody complained because it was very nice outside, the sun, the birds, the swans, the lake... I was with my family and was truly happy!

We walked around in Kolding for a bit, did some sight-seeing and then walked back to the hotel. We were very tired and took a little nap. Then my sister and I watched desperate houswives (one of the many things that we both love) and my parents looked for a restaurant for the evening.

We went to a very good restaurant where they serve very good meat. MMMM it was sooo good! I first had a carpaccio and then a very juicy filet of beef with a potato in the oven with sour cream on top. If you ever go to Kolding, you have to go there!!

It was very very cold that night. Minus 11 degrees... But I heard in Haderslev it was minus 15 degrees, brrrrr!!

The next morning we slept long, had again a very good breakfast and then went back to Haderslev. Then we did THE walk!! I mean the walk I have to do every day when I go to school. But we went a little further so I could show them the rest of the town. It was sunday, so there weren’t much stores open, but it was ok, they didn’t come here to shop.

We walked back to groftholtvaenget and then it was time to say goodbye again. It was very hard to do that, harder then when I was leaving home end of february, I don’t know why! Maybe I realized here how much I really love them, and how much they really love me.... They have come so far to see me.... I now understand the unconditional love that one could feel for another human being. I hope one day I can find somebody whom I can share this with.

O My god, I am being so corny.... Sorry, my emotions just can’t control themselves.

So now I am sitting back in my room, writing to my blog.... I can look out to my next adventure... that will be my trip to Norway the 26th of March!! I’m going to visit 2 of my best friends from school, who are there on erasmus! Wow, I’m sooo looking forward to it, It’s going to be great and very exciting!!

See you on the next blog!

Pubcrawl

On thursday, our buddies organized a pubcrawl. We went from bar to bar... to bar. It was a very good initiative. In each bar we got something free to drink. That was very nice. Actually we only did tree bars... We ended in the Ras cafe because there we could pay 50 kroners and could drink as much beer as we wanted between 10 and 12 pm... That was a good deal!!

I didn’t drink to much that night because my parents and sister were coming over the next day, and I didn’t want to have a hangover then.

But It was very fun, I had a good time and think we should do it again.

Dress-up party

The school had organized a big party to celebrate fastelavn or Carnaval as we say it. Everybody had to dress up in something funny. I was going to be one of the girls from grease. I like dressing up, I thing it’s so much fun.

All of the erasmus students were going to the party, and I must say, everybody did a very good job to dress up nicely, with the materials we had... because we obviously didn’t bring our whole closet from home.

It was a very nice party, but to be honest i had a little bit to much to drink! So it all went so fast... But Im sure I had a really good time.

Copenhagen trip

About a weel or two ago the whole erasmus-gang including me went on a trip to Copenhagen. It was really fun. We saw a lot of things like the little mermaid, the black diamond, Rosenborg castle and amalienborg castle and the round tower. We also went to the national museum, it was very nice, especially the kids departement. Kids can go there and try out lots of things like dress up and kook dinner in an ancient kitchen, or play school in an old classroom. It's really a fun way to learn about historie and the way things were in the old days...
It was very cold and it snowed a lot, but it was ok. We had a little free time to shop on the longest shopping street in Europe. It's called Stroget. It's really amazing. If you can't find anything there, you can't find it anywhere.
Some belgian girls and I went to visit the carlsberg brewery. Not everybody wanted to do that, some people wanted to go to Christiana. But i was happy that i had chosen the brewery. It was very fun en interesting, plus we got 2 free beers... how great is that!
The trip was very exhausting and everybody was very tired after it. So it was fun to come home to our cosy appartment.
Copenhagen is a great city but to be honest, I didn't fell in love with it. Maybe because of the weather and the cold... Everybody keeps telling me that Copenhagen is much more beautiful in de spring or summer. Then Tivoli, the amusementpark in the center of Copenhagen is also open, so that has got something to do with it. Maybe I will go back some day when it's warmer.

I'm Belgian, and damn sure proud to be one!

The responsible teacher for international relations and erasmusstudents, Jette talked to us about different stereotypes. She asked us what we tought danish people would be like when we first arrived in Denmark.
I thought Danish people were very tall and had blue eyes and blonde hair. That was partly true but not all Danes are like that.
I was told that the people here are very friendly, kind and helpfull. That is true, but you yourself have to be open towards them, then they will tell you everything and help you whenever and wherever.
I heard also that Denmark was very expensive. Unfortunatly that is also true, the food and drinks here are very expensive.
We also had to think about some things that is typical for our own country. Of course anyone who knows a little bit about Belgium, can say we are well known for our dellicious beer, chocolate and french fries. Belgium has a good reputation when it comes to food en haute cuisine. And so we love eating out and enjoy a lovely evening with friends or family.
Belgium also has great sports(wo)men, Like our Tennisgirls/woman Kim, Justine and Yanina... and of course our footballteams and then you have Tommeke Boonen... :-)
Begian people are also known to be hard workers... as you can see when looking at me :-) just kidding!

OK computer

The one thing that I wished for not to happen, happened...
My computer broke...
I went to a local computerstore and they said my hard disk is fried; How could that be? They could't give me an explanation. So here I stand with my broken laptop in the middle of Denmark. Luckely I still have my sweet parents and sister who are more worried about me than anybody. My mum suggested to buy another one immediatly, I'm so lucky to have such great parents, and of course a killersister who took care of the practical things. And so Loes her brother is comming on a visit very soon (actually i'm staying up late to wait for him) and he will bring my brand new laptop among other things... (I hope the car is still driving with all the extra luggage from Loes, Ine, Caroline and me) It will be the best valentinesgift ever!!! Though it's not from a lover, it's from people who i love more than words can say.
And so after a long struggle (we also had problems to get internet) tomorrow Marie Claus will be wireless in Denmark too!!!
Prepare yourselves for lots and lots of news....

What do we eat?

One thing is sure, we will not starve to death.
The first two weeks we have eaten a lot of things. All tough we (my roommate, Loes, and 2 neigbours, Ine and Caroline) are not the most talented chefs, we try to make the best of it every day. And really we are not bad at all. Especially the spaghetti!! That was a big succes! But not only the spaghetti, the salmon, koteletten, sausages... were very tasty. Yesterday we went to a local grill. I ate a real cheeseburger with french fries. Mmmmm, it was sooo good, and allthough they weren't really belgian fries, they were very good.
So mum, don't worry, I'm not starving to death!!
Today we did our first basket of laundry, again something we are not so familiar with. But after some searching and grrrr..ing (and some help from a kind neigbour) we found out how the waching machine works, with good results!! Our clothes are wearable again!! They smell like a sunny summerday!
So that was the practical side of erasmus in a nutshell.

o-ow

o-ow, i really have to make some time to update my blog...
Allready two weeks have passed, time flies in Denmark.
So what have I been doing these first two weeks? Let me think!
The first week we moved it to our appartment and tried to make it more of our own. It worked very well, I allready feel very much at home in our cosy little crib! I'm a little bit dissapointed that it is kind of far away from the city and school. I must say I'm not used to walking an hour every day, but I think it will do me well. ( I hope you're proud of me daddy!!)
I was very curious about the school, the people and the lessons... it was all very exiting!
I was very happy to found out there were so many people from different countries present here. It's going to be great all together.
During the first week we got the asignment to make a litlle powerpoint about our country or our city... it was a nice way to found out something more about other countries.
We did our presentation about our beloved studentcity Ghent. It made me realise what a nice city it really is, and for a minute I longed for home... Especially 'DE GENTSE FEESTEN'!
Some of the erasmus students think about comming to de gentse feesten. It would really be great!!! What a party that will be, i can't imagine!
In the first week we visited some practise places. I went together with Loes (my roommate and classmate in belgium) and Kari (one of the sweetest girls i know from norway) to a primary school were we vistited the 1st grade. It is simular to the 1st grade in Belgium, were the children learn to read, write and do mathematics. It was suprising to see how much the schoolsystem is different from the one in Belgium!!
In Denmark there is a very loose atmosphere. The children can walk around free in the classroom, they eat together in the classroom, and the teachers are calles by their first name.
I'm not going to write all my impressions about the visit here on my blog, I will save that for my paper.
So that's all for now folks
Love and greeting
Marie

Blog goes English!!

From now on my blog will be in English!!
So the other students and teachers can understand it too...
It will be a little more difficult but I will try my best not to make a lot of mistakes. I think it will not be a big problem. I like wrighting in English but the qwerty keyboard is starting to get on my nerves. I will get used to it I guess. And when I go home the azerty will get on my nerves... Oh well, No problem I'll get trough it...

Hellow

Mijn grootste nachtmerrie is uitgekomen.
Marieken

woensdag 27 januari 2010

It's the final countdown!!

Het is bijna zover!! Spannend enal!!

zondag 10 januari 2010

Woohoow, mijn eigen blog!!!
